You are renowned for your style & have perfected the art of owning a smaller but better wardrobe. What are some of the principles you live by to achieve this? Does this apply to other aspects of your lifestyle like grooming?
That’s very kind of you to say so. I think over the years I have been able to learn more about myself and my style as I continue to appreciate my existing wardrobe. I think it’s less about restricting yourself to fewer items, but creating a wardrobe which functions together; being mindful about what colours work well, understanding how items create different silhouettes. I’m sure there’s still combinations in my wardrobe I’m yet to discover which only reinforce my love for owning a smaller, slower wardrobe. In terms of practical principles, I always try and be intentional with my purchases, often giving myself a couple months before buying something and when I can, trying it on in person. Then there’s the thought process of whether I can buy something second hand rather than new, or if I even need to buy anything at all.
With grooming, I admittedly have a slightly broader scope as I’m often trying out new products for work, but I still like to be mindful about how much I have at one time. It’s nice to be as intentional as possible.
How do you go about curating your grooming routine? What kind of products or brands are you drawn to?
I like keeping things as simple as I can, while also taking the time for myself. Our days are mostly consumed by our screens and so by being a bit slower and taking that extra time in the bathroom it can be quite meditative. I try and listen to what my skin needs, whether that’s more hydration, a stronger cleanser, a scrub etc. It often changes throughout the time of day and year and takes its lead from the seasons. Brands that catch my eye often has some connection to nature and provenance, but a well-designed bit of branding does not go amiss.
If you could give your younger self some grooming advice, what would it be?
Let your skin do its thing and don’t be tempted to pick and prod at your face.
Do you have any tips on how to keep your skincare game strong?
Following on from keeping things simple, ensuring you’re drinking enough water and applying SPF daily will go a long way. There’s also the temptation to dive straight into the deep end with acids and peels and I think it’s actually more sensible to start with smaller percentages and work your way up if you feel that’s what your skin needs.
Our first product centres around daily rituals. What are your personal, creative or grooming rituals, if any?
There are pillars in my days which keep me focused and mentally better. Running is one of them. Often working independently, running with a friend or in a group is my chance to unwind and talk things through with someone else. I love the freedom of working for myself, but I also like my fix of sharing ideas with a friend and talking through problems I might be going through. Keeping things to ourselves is never good for us so having someone that’s willing to listen and in my case, run, is super important to me.
